Listening for Lions, by Gloria Whelan
Amazing historical fiction about Rachel, an English girl who’s lived in Africa her whole life. When her missionary/doctor parents die from influenza, she is taken in by her greedy neighbors, whose daughter Valerie just died as well. Since both girls had red hair the parents pass Rachel off as their daughter and send her to England to try and get her to ingratiate herself with Valerie’s wealthy grandfather, who was going to write them out of the will. Rachel is a really appealing character, the plot is interesting and suspenseful, and the resolution is incredibly satisfying.
